Top 5 from the Week #9

It’s been a minute since I’ve had an ACTUAL top 5 from the week, instead of just some random songs that I’ve kindaa been listening to or the one for the Week Fulla Dreamville where the songs were just from one album. I’m still not the point where I’m listening to music like that…which is….weird????? I’ve been listening to my records a lot, but I haven’t touched by Spotify Discover Weekly in a minute. So because of that, we have some oldies for the top 5 this week. But I’m hoping to get back to discovering music really really soon. I think that’s the part of me that has been missing for these last couple months.

“So Beautiful” – Musiq Soulchild

I’ve loved this song for a really long time. In fact, I’ve loved Musiq Soulchild for a really long time. I’ve never listened to one of his projects front to back (LOL), but he and the songs I have heard from him have existed in my musical memory since forever. And “So Beautiful” has been a song that has buried itself DEEP into my brain. It really is an amazing song. And I think it – along with basically all of the other Musiq songs I’ve heard – just shows how STRONG of a songwriter he is. And JR Hutson’s production is spectacular. Like, I really don’t know how anyone could NOT like this song. Like….that’s impossible.

“Halfcrazy” – Musiq Soulchild

I 100% believe that this is one of the greatest songs ever made. And I’m not exaggerating about that AT ALL. This song is an absolute masterpiece. The guitar at the beginning is perfection, the layering of Musiq’s voice in the chorus is beautiful, and there’s a little part at the end of the song where he’s like “Unh,” and there’s just SOMETHING that I love about that part of the song. I’m really into artists deciding to keep the moments where they take a breath or talk to someone in the studio, etc. There’s just something very human about those moments, and they make me feel closer to the song-making process and the person who created it. This isn’t one of those songs where there are blaring horns and you can hear people crip walkin’ on the moon in the background. It’s very simple in its essence, but for me, that’s the best part about it. Musiq was able to convey so much with so little, and it really paid off.

“I Want You” – Marvin Gaye

So I’ve heard this song a bunch and saved it to my Spotify Liked songs a while back, but for some reason, I “rediscovered” this song, while in the car with my mom a couple of days ago. I heard the beginning of the song and immediately pulled my phone out to ask Google what the song was, so I could save it. Little did I remember, I had already heard and loved the song. I love love love the production on this track, and Marvin Gaye has such a unique voice and is such an amazing singer. I’m making it part of my life’s mission to listen to his music more (though by the very nature of being Black and growing up with a Black parent, I’ve already heard a few of his songs) and learn more about him; I don’t know a whole bunch about him other than he met a very very tragic end at the hands of his father. And I’m ready for him to exist more fully in my mind.

“I Wonder If Take You Home” – Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam

I would like to admit on here that the first time I heard the “I wonder if I take you home, would you still be in love, baby?” line was when Fergie sung it on “Don’t Phunk with my Heart” by the Black Eyed Peas. I’m not ashamed of that fact, but it is a fact nonetheless lol. This was was another one that came on frequently this week, while my mom and I were out driving around doing errands. I’m glad I finally got the chance to listen to the origin of that iconic line. I haven’t gotten a chance to watch the music video yet, but off the strength of the bang, headband, and eyeliner in the thumbnail, I’m sure it’s gonna be a good one.

“The Bird” – Anderson .Paak

I hadn’t listened to Malibu (2016) in a really REALLY long time before a couple of days ago. For some reason, I was living my life, doing something around the house, and randomly Andy started singing “a bird with the word came to me” over and over again in my head. For whatever reason, my heart really wanted me to listen to that song, and I ended up listening to the entire project while I was cooking dinner. I had forgotten how AMAZING it was and was happy to have that moment of rediscovery. I think I’ll do an Album Look Back or MFOAT on this project soon. Or a First Listen on one of the other projects that Andy has released since, since I haven’t heard either of those in full yet. Or both! Anyway, I’m very thankful for Malibu, and this song is god-level.

Week Fulla Dreamville – Top 5 #8: Songs from Bas’s ‘Last Winter’

WOW. Here we (finally) are at the end of the first Week Fulla! And what a wild one it was. I have definitely enjoyed doing this. And I’m hoping to get it right the second time around lol – that’s if I don’t have another set of existential crises in the middle of the week … Continue reading Week Fulla Dreamville – Top 5 #8: Songs from Bas’s ‘Last Winter’
