It’s Friday! That means it’s time for BRACKETS and time for me to pit two of my favorite artists against each other. This week, we have Childish Gambino and Mick Jenkins. I have an idea of who’s gonna get this one, but let’s let it play out anyway!
ROUND 1: SPOTIFY TOP 10
HOW MANY SONGS FROM THEIR TOP 10 SONGS ON SPOTIFY (AS OF JUNE 19TH 2020) POP UP ON MY SPOTIFY LIKED TRACKS PLAYLIST.
So we have:
LOL once again, I am fake. There are a bunch of songs for both of these artists that I liked a LOT that I just haven’t saved to Spotify. But, regardless, Bino has this one!
ROUND 2: DISCOGRAPHY
QUALITY OF THE PROJECTS THEY RELEASED BEFORE I STARTED LISTENING TO THEM (BASED ON THE LIST ON THEIR WIKI PAGES)
CHILDISH GAMBINO: I started listening to Bino before Because the Internet (2013) came out – which feels like SUCH a long time ago. Looking into his music more, there are a LOT more pre-BTI projects than I thought there were. BUT, I will say that everything I have listened to from Bino before BTI was great – I went through a little moment a couple of weeks ago where I was listening to “That Power” a LOT. I also will give Bino a little boost because of his time on Community, which is a show that has a very special place in my heart.
for a funny story about because the internet…
Whew. This isn’t the normal “TAKE” content, but I have a story to tell lol. Here we go. So as you should know by now, I’ve started getting serious into collecting vinyl records. It’s something that I’ve always been moderately interested in, but once I got back to GA, I figured starting a collection was … Continue reading TAKE #11: S C A M M E D.
MICK JENKINS: I didn’t start listening to Mick until The Water[s] (2014) came out, so I don’t have a bunch of experience with his music before that project. I did listen to a couple of songs from Trees & Truths (2013), but I never got a chance to listen to the entire project. So I guess by default, Bino gets this round as well.
ROUND #3: REPEAT VALUE
WHO HAVE I LISTENED TO THE MOST DURING THE PAST YEAR (BETWEEN JUNE 26 2019 AND JUNE 26 2020)
Here are the numbers (per Last.FM):
LOL tbh, I think Bino’s is so high because I used to exercise to “19.10” from 3.15.20 (2020) ALL THE TIME. So that added to a lot of the listens for that project. I also did a First Listen, and that required me to go through it at least 2 times. I also did a First Listen for Mick’s The Circus (2020), but I think a lot of the listens for that album comes from “The Light” and “Carefree.” Either way, Bino has this one again.
ROUND #4: IMPACT ON MY LIFE
This round a very easily goes to a Childish Gambino LOL. I feel like he has been almost ever-present in my life. I started listening to him in high school, and I still listen to him now. And it’s not even that his music has been in my life for a while; he also has made a bunch of great content outside of his music that is just as amazing and has stuck with me for years. Like I mentioned before, Community is a show that I hold very closely in my heart. I watched it religiously for a couple of years until the last couple of seasons where it seemed like the heart wasn’t there anymore (and Bino left lol). But while I was watching it, I’d watched it a lot. I had a weird time where I got my phone stolen at a Tyler the Creator concert – not sure if I’ve ever told that story on here LOL but I think I have – and Community help me go to sleep at night because I was having anxiety dreams about what I could have done to keep my phone from being lost.
And then Gambino also has Atlanta. And that show is absolutely fantastic. Everything about that show from the writing, to the acting, to the music in the show, to the camera work. Everything about that show is spectacular. Donald just has an amazing mind; he has a creativity level on that I can only hope to get to at some point. And he has this amazing ability to move fluidly through a bunch of different genres and mediums without anything feeling like it’s spilling over from another project. Everything that he does feels like it can exist on its own. And that’s something that is so special about him. And y’all know I love Southern Black people LOL, and he’s from Georgia, too????? And today I found out that he was born in September – he’s not a September Virgo but he’s September Libra, and I love September Libras as well – so he’s really just hitting all the marks for me lol. So Mick Jenkins can’t even really get close to Gambino. It’s times like this during BRACKETS where it’s a very easily a losing game for one of the artists because the other one has just been such an influential part of my life. There will definitely be a couple more of these in the future lol. Anyway, Bino has this one.
BONUS ROUND: ‘CAUSE I DON’T WANT MICK TO HAVE ZERO POINTS LOL
I’m just gonna give the bonus round to Mick lol.
NOW FOR THE TALLY…
Childish Gambino is finishing with 4 rounds won, and Mick Jenkins is finishing with 1, so BRACKET #2 is going to Childish Gambino, my golden boy and creative role model (one of many).
Let us update the bracket, shall we???
And there we have it. Bino is our second BRACKETS winner, and he’ll be going against Lupe Fiasco in a couple of weeks. I’m really interested to see how that one plays out. That’ll be one of the ones that hurts a little bit lol.
