Wow. I’m surprised I was able to pull it together enough to do this today lol. But after an intensely emotional night, I needed something to get my mind off of things and get my energy right. It was a pretty solid group of songs from last week’s Discover Weekly. I only listened to half of the recommended songs, but if they’re any indication of the other 15, I say Spotify did a decent job. Not a lot of songs made it to my Liked Tracks, but overall a good group.
You can find last week’s Discover (Last) Weekly here.
“Boblo Boat” (feat. J. Cole) by Royce Da 5’9″ and J. Cole
I had heard this one when it came out, but I wasn’t a huge fan of it. I like it a lot more a second time around. There are points where it sounds like three different songs mashed together, but it comes together really nicely. I love Cole’s verse.
“Gardens” by AYLØ, ft. Tau Benah and Chris Generalz
I LOVE the beginning of this song. That GUITAR!! And the way the beat comes it with it is G O D L E V E L. I don’t think I’ve ever heard any songs from any of these folks before, but they created something beautiful on this song. After hearing Cole’s verse on “Boblo Boat,” I could definitely hear a version of this song with a verse from him on it.
“Pedigree” by Ari Lennox
After hearing Ari on a bunch of features over the past couple of months, it’s been really nice to hear her on her own song. I’ve listened to a couple of songs from her before that I really liked, but hearing her on random adlibs for Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019), I kind of got tired of her voice. This song restored my appreciation for her vocals.
“Grammy’s Babies” by Cam O’bi
Cam O’bi really is a gem. I’ve only heard one other song from him – “Tenderheaded” with Smino, and I guess “Grown Ass Kid” kind of counts – but I really love the vibe he brings. Everything he makes sounds like I’m getting hit with huge waves of nostalgia. Literally feels like sitting on somebody’s front porch at night talking to your favorite person.
“Shallow Dimes” by Childish Major
Every time I hear Childish Major – which is really only every once in a while – he does great things to my soul. I loved what he gave to Revenge of the Dreamers III and his song “Happy Birthday” is one of my favorites. I think if I listen to “Shallow Dimes” a couple more times, I could really get into it. I love the guitar loop in the production, and CM’s voice sounds really good on this song.
“When the Sun Comes Out” by kadiata and Sam Wise
The British accent kind of caught me off guard at the beginning of this song lol (idk if I’ve mentioned before that British accents sometimes don’t sit right with me in songs, but for some reason they just hit my ears weird), but I’m HERE for this song. Especially the chorus. This is definitely a song for the summertime. Something for the girls to dance to.
“Easter Sunday” by Zelooper and Earl Sweatshirt
Good! I liked the production a lot.
“BLACK BALLOONS | 13LACK 13ALLOONZ – Pazmal Remix” by Denzel Curry, Twelve’len, GoldLink, and Pazmal
LOL Spotify must know I love Denzel, because they have blessed me with Denzel on my Discover Weekly two weeks in a row. I will be honest, though. I had to turn this song off after the first chorus lol. I love the original song, and this remix wasn’t doing enough for me to feel like the original needed to be replaced. It felt like sacrilege.
“RIP” (feat. Tyler, The Creator) by Casey Veggies and Tyler, The Creator
Not bad. I like the verses a lot (love Tyler ❤ ), but it felt like there was something missing in this song. I think because there was like zero bass. If there was a little something to fill in the background of the production, I’d like it more.
“Escalators” by Reese LAFLARE
If there was a hip hop horror movie created, this song would be the title track. There’s something extremely eerie and haunting about this song that I LOVEEEEE, and I need Jordan Peele to make a movie based completely on this song.
“April 25th” by Kadeem Tyrell
a vibe.
“Holding Me” by Beshken and Halima
This song has a bit of a 90s r&b vibe to it that I really like. It feels like the sister track to FKA Twigs’s “In Time.”
“Temporary” by Aaron May
I feel like I’ve heard this song before, but I literally don’t know where and why I would have listened to it since I’ve only heard one Aaron May song (knowingly) before this. I like the smoothness of the production. Nice!
“Black Betty White” by McClenney and Erick the Architect
Wow! It’s been a MINUTE since I’ve heard something from both McClenney and Erick the Architect. The last time I listened to McClenney, he hadn’t dropped the “Chris” from the beginning of the name he was going by, and I think he had just dropped Portrait in Two (2017). Last time I heard Erick was probably on some song from 3001: A Laced Odyssey (2016). I liked this, though. It felt like something slightly different from what I’m used to hearing from the two of them separately.
“Mixed Messages” by Big K.R.I.T.
Good! I don’t listen to a lot of Big K.R.I.T. – he’s someone that I want to get into more in the future.

Bite-sized Album Review #2: Denzel Curry’s ‘TA13OO’
According to Google, my first recorded instance of anything relating to Denzel Curry’s TA13OO is me looking at the lyrics to “Cash Maniac” 6 days after the album came out. I don’t know why I was looking at the lyrics to that particular song, but I can tell you that I’ve looked at the lyrics … Continue reading Bite-sized Album Review #2: Denzel Curry’s ‘TA13OO’
