It’s Saturday. Which means that I’m up before the sun, so that I can write this up and schedule it before I spend the rest of the day doing stuff around the house. My Saturdays usually include feeding me and my cat before washing clothes, cleaning all the blankets in the house, etc. and remaking my bed (I love having a cat 🙂 ), making kombucha (yep, I’m one of those lol), cleaning my cat’s litter box completely (I LOVE having a cat), cleaning my room, and whatever other things need to be done around the house. I could definitely spread these things throughout the week, but why would I do that, when I can essentially do a marathon? So here I am, in my bed (cozied up as always), with my fan on, listening to Lil Kim’s Hard Core (1996) – for the first time EVER, which is an interesting experience with all the convos happening around “WAP” right now – and writing. It would be a mood in any other circumstance lol.
Side note: Next week will be a Week Fulla! I’m gonna do this one a little bit different; instead of all of the different stories I do being adapted for the week, I’m just doing First Listens on here the whole week, so instead of 1, there will be 6. Which means that I’ll be doing nothing but listening to new songs and writing. Which is the real vibe.
Anyway, on to this week’s Top 5.
“In Your Arms” and “Show You” – Baby Rose
I have listened to these two songs SO MUCH the past couple of weeks. I knew this was gonna happen lol. As soon as I listened to them for the first time, I knew that they would be in an endless loop. In the shower. Sitting in my bed writing. Literally whenever I get a free moment, I’m like “man, I could really listen to some Baby Rose right now!” I still haven’t listened to anything else from To Myself – because I’m just….not trying to cry – but I will probably be listening to these two songs for the rest of my life. They’re so beautiful.
“Alive” – Black Eyed Peas
Ok, so listen. This might be controversial, but The E.N.D. (2009) by Black Eyed Peas is one of the best albums ever released lol. And I’m 100000% serious about that. I was cleaning up the bathroom the other day – one of the things not on my list for today lol – and my soul started craving this album. I actually was hoping to listen to my ~CDs~ for a little moment of nostalgia, but the process of finding a plug for the only living CD player in the house turned me off to the whole idea, so I ended up just using Spotify. And The E.N.D. took me right on back to 2009. It’s SO GOOD and has aged SO WELL. I ended up listening to Elephunk (2003) and Monkey Business (2005) a couple days later, and like….the Black Eyed Peas were really making FIRE albums. I forgot how many amazing the songs were on those two projects as well. So I’m putting “Alive” on here, but it’s really representing those three projects.
“We Belong Together” – Mariah Carey
The Emancipation of Mimi (2005) was another project I was listening to, whilst cleaning up the bathroom (I eventually migrated to cleaning the kitchen) the other day. Short story time: I got The Emancipation of Mimi cd – which I’m REALLY hoping to get in record form one day – the same time I got Kanye’s Late Registration (2005), so that was in…2005 lol. Me and my mom were living in an apartment at the time, and I had a karaoke machine that migrated between the living room and my room. My mom would ask me sometimes to sing “We Belong Together” for her lol. So I’d bring out my karaoke machine – I can’t remember if I used the mic or not – and I’d throw in The Emancipation of Mimi. I was – and still am lol – shy to sing by myself in front of people, so I would turn away from her and sing the song, so I wouldn’t have to see her reaction LOL I don’t know WHY my mom asked me to do this, but…¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So I have a strong love and strong memories attached to this project.
(note: still listening to Hard Core, and I just finished listening to “Queen Bitch” – I’M SO SHOOK THAT MARY J. BLIGE SAMPLED THAT SONG FOR “I CAN LOVE YOU” AND LIL’ KIM WAS ON THAT TRACK WITH HER! I don’t know why that caught me so off guard, but the song came on, and I was like….”Is “I Can Love You” on this??” Come to find out, MJB sampled “Queen Bitch” and then had Kim on the song with her. That’s so FIRE to me!)
“Blinding Lights” – The Weeknd
There have been some ~weird~ vibes around the house the past couple of days, so I’ve been spending a lot of time in my room – a lot more than usual – and a couple of nights ago, I just wanted to sing lol. The Weeknd is usually who I chose when I decide to go on a singing spree, and “Blinding Lights” is just such a sing-alone-in-your-room song. Like…you are REQUIRED to sing along to this song when it comes out. So I spent about an hour singing my little heart out in my room – with the door closed for reasons I explained already lol. Very refreshing experience. So shout out to Abel for making such wonderful music. Peep my First Listen for After Hours (2020) here.
I’m reaching the end of Hard Core – I have 3 songs and a skit left. Really solid project. I love Lil Kim’s sound. This is my first interaction with her solo music, but I kinda knew what to expect. This project is a really cool combination of super sexy and super raw. Not sure if I’ll be revisiting it much, but I’m here for it, nonetheless.
here’s something else you might like:
This has been a great music for me music-wise! I haven’t necessarily discovered a lot of new stuff (there have been a couple of albums, though), but I have spent a lot of time with older songs, and the newer songs that I have heard this week have been top tier. This is the first … Continue reading Top 5 from the Week #17 (ft. Juice WRLD, The Roots, Childish Gambino, Lil Wayne, and Lil Baby)
