This week has been a REALLY good week for music. I’ve been listening to Tasty (2003) a lot, Spilligion (2020) is still hitting pretty hard, I’ve been revisiting some of my favorite Michael Jackson tracks – “The Lady in My Life,” “I Can’t Help It,” and “Liberian Girl” being three of them – I’ve listened to some older JID tracks a few days ago, as well as some other good stuff. Feeling very fulfilled musically! Other aspects of my life are questionable, but that’s nothing new lol. Here we go with the Top 5:
“Let the World Turn” – Death
I listened to Death for the first time a couple years ago, after hearing “Freakin’ Out” during the Tyler the Creator episode of Pharrell’s OtherTONE podcast. Fell in love instantly. But for whatever reason, I didn’t listen to the rest of …For the Whole World to See (2009) until this MORNING. I was scrolling through Reddit, and someone mentioned that the project (the vinyl version, of course lol) was in stock on the Drag City website. After having a flashback to who Death was, I decided that it was time for me to listen to the whole thing, so I could decide on whether or not I wanted to buy it – it’s a little difficult to find, so I didn’t wanna waste too much time making a decision. Long story short, I listened to it, LOVED it, found out that Yasiin Bey also really likes this project (KING! STAN!), and I’ve have dedicated my life to finding more Black punk/grunge bands to listen to. “Let the World Turn” was an immediate standout – it reminded me a lot of Green Day’s “Jesus of Suburbia,” where it feels like you’re being whipped around the track like a ragdoll. There’s just so much happening! I plan on talking more about Death and Black rockers after next week.
“Trick Me” – Kelis
I already talked about Miss Kelis’s Tasty earlier this week, but I just need to reiterate my love for “Trick Me.” I’ve been listening to this song sooooooo much the past week lol. And I love love LOVE the video for it. She’s PERFECT.
“Pizza Shop” – IDK
I’ve loved this song for a long time, but I was listening to it in the car the other day, and it just HIT DIFFERENT (by SZA ft. Ty Dolla $ign). It’s one of those songs that I love to rap at the top of my lungs; like, I can’t resist lol. I literally stop everything I’m doing – except when I was listening to it in the car…for obvious reasons lol – and rap the whole thing. I do prefer the music video version, though. The MF DOOM and Del the Funky Homosapien verses feel unnecessary to me and kind of throw off the narrative a little bit. I don’t hate them on there, but IDK does fine on his own! I would love to have that version on Spotify.
“Lifestyle” – Rich Gang
LOL I was listening to this one in the car the same day (cough cough, they’re on this playlist called “scam szn” — you can find more playlists here) and forgot how good this song was. We played it in marching band, while I was in high school and hearing it so many times made my appreciation for it grow. But I also don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this song.
“Judas” – Spillage Village
I talked about this track already during this week’s First Listen. SO GOOD.
here’s something else you might like:
Normally on Fridays I do vinyl library, however it’s been super rainy the past couple of days, so the light in my room is too trash for me to try to take any pictures. So I decided to switch around today and tomorrow, so we have a Top 5 from the Week today, instead. I’ve … Continue reading Top 5 from the Week #20 (ft. N.E.R.D.)
