vinyl library #8: anderson .paak’s ‘ventura’

I don’t even have the words to describe this week lol. I feels like it’s just been absolutely all OVER the place. This election has been going on for what has seemed like 18 years (but Georgia is coming through!), we’re already six days into November, I’m trying to get caught up on graduate school research so I can finally do the applications for it, I have an unidentified headache, Tr*mp is losing his mind, my cat is oblivious to everything happening in the world, I’ve started embroidering. LOL there’s just a lot going on. I’ve been alright mentally, though, which is nice for a change. A few of my record preorders from the summer are starting to come in, and I ended up buying a new organizer for my room, so I have some extra space for my records. Very VERY happy with it. Out of my preorders, I’ve gotten Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die (2020) – which doesn’t have “Smile” on it which is WILD and upsetting – and Anderson .Paak’s Ventura (2019). I was supposed to do a write-up on Ventura a while back, but since I haven’t done that yet, I figured I’d just do the whole “two birds” thing and talk about it here!

This week we have Anderson .Paak’s ‘Ventura’ (2019)

there are three versions of the ventura record: a standard black LP, a yellow LP, and the milky clear limited edition version, which i have. with the packaging and design on the sleeve, everything about the experience of opening this bad boy up was BEAUTIFUL. i think this is one of my favorite record sleeve designs out of my collection.

LOL Excuse the Tik Tok gif – I usually do a Boomerang, but it turned out really blurry (blurrier than this one lol), and I didn’t feel like getting out of the bed before I finished this. I started listening to Ventura – all the way through – a couple of times, but I never got further than “Winners Circle,” because something always took my attention away. So my first time actually listening to this project in full was the day after I got it.

And I’m actually kind of happy that I ended up waiting until I was able to play it on my record player. It’s such a great project. Really short – which I LOVE – and groovy, jazzy, soulful, and PERFECT. I love the features on here, especially Jazmine Sullivan on “Good Heels” and Smokey Robinson on “Make It Better.” And I love how much Andy Paak appreciates making music; you can really hear that on this project. He wastes no time, making every second count by giving us something really remarkable to listen to on every song. It’s not a very over the top project; it feels very intimate (dark basement club-esque), and that seems to be the overall intention of the project when you pair the music with the album cover and photographs inside. And I like that. I love an intimate music moment. Andy Paak just doesn’t make bad music. At ALL.
